What is Fistula?

A fistula is an abnormal channel that connects two organs or an organ to the skin. An anal fistula commonly forms when an infection in an anal gland creates an abscess that does not heal completely. The resulting tunnel can lead to recurring drainage, discomfort, and infection if not properly treated.

Common Symptoms

Pain Around the Anus
Swelling and Redness
Pus or Fluid Discharge
Recurrent Anal Abscesses
Irritation Around the Skin
Discomfort During Bowel Movements

What Causes Fistula?

Fistulas generally develop due to infection, inflammation, or injury in the affected area.

Several factors can contribute to fistula formation:

Anal Abscess: The most common cause of anal fistulas. An untreated abscess may develop into a fistula.

Blocked Anal Glands: Infection in small glands around the anus can lead to abscess formation.

Crohn's Disease: Chronic inflammatory bowel disease can increase the risk of fistulas.

Chronic Infections: Certain infections may damage tissues and create abnormal passages.

Trauma or Injury: Injury to the anal or rectal area may contribute to fistula development.

Previous Surgery: Surgical procedures in the anorectal region can sometimes lead to fistula formation.

Tuberculosis: In rare cases, tuberculosis infections can cause fistulas.

Radiation Therapy: Tissue damage from radiation treatment may increase risk.

Inflammatory Conditions: Long-term inflammation can contribute to abnormal tunnel formation.

Poor Wound Healing: Delayed healing after infection or surgery may result in a fistula.
